The industry consists of two main divisions-family care system whose workers are mostly self-employed and many of whom do not even take a fee because of being related to the child’s parents, and private child day care centers. The latter are establishments that provide paid care for infants, toddlers, preschool children, and older children in before- and after-school programs. Although the family care services do not have a fixed criterion for the caregivers, the private part of this industry wants employees with a good education as well as prior experience with child development work.
According to a survey report, in America alone, child day care services provided about 859,200 wage and salary jobs in 2008. There were an additional 428,500 self-employed and unpaid family workers in the industry, most of whom were family child care providers, and some were self-employed managers of child care centers.
Jobs in child day care industry are found across the world, depending upon the distribution of the population. However, day care centers are less common in rural areas, where there are fewer children to support a separate facility. Another research shows that in USA alone, almost 86 percent of all wage and salary jobs in 2008 were located in establishments with fewer than 50 employees.
Self-employment opportunities in this industry are considered among the best in the economy. A large number-about 428,500 of all workers in the industry- are self-employed or unpaid family workers. This difference reflects the ease of entering the child day care business.
Usually, the median age of child day care providers is about 38, compared with about 45 for all workers. About 19 percent of all care providers are 24 years or younger as opposed to about 13 percent for all industries. The age requirements also vary among different regions and companies. There are some establishments that even take teachers assistants of 14 to 16. Thus, child day care industry is a good employment option for people on the hunt of a part time job. It gives the opportunity of pursuing your education simultaneously as most companies offer a maximum of 12 hours working job. Another plus point of jobs in this field is that employment chances do not become stagnant. As people find better jobs, they leave this industry, making room for newcomers.
A survey states that wage and salary jobs in the child day care services industry are projected to grow about 15 percent over the 2008-18 periods, compared with the 11 percent employment growth projected for all industries combined. It is therefore easily predictable that center-based day care would continue to expand its share of the industry because an increasing number of parents prefer its more formal setting and believe that it provides a better base for children before they begin proper schooling. Those who wish to enter family child care industry should not be disappointed as these providers will continue to remain an important source of care for many young children because some parents prefer the more personal attention that such a setting can provide. So, overall it is a forthcoming employment industry and will develop further in the upcoming days.
