My Study: When is the best time to post on Facebook?

If you have a Facebook business page, you’ve probably wondered: “What’s the best time to post on Facebook?” This is the post that is probably not going to answer that question for you. But first, let me share the results of my study.

Best-time-to-post-on-Facebook-clock

Beginning in January, and ending in April, I kept track of every status update’s impressions on The Marketing Spot Facebook page. You can find impressions of your page’s status updates after about 24 hours, here’s an example.

Facebook-Impressions

What are Facebook impressions: It’s the number of times your status update has been exposed in your fans news feeds, visits to your page, and third party tools like Hootsuite. These are important numbers, because the more impressions you have, the more people are likely to see your status update.

So, I kept track of all my impressions from January through April, and recorded them by hour. I tracked every hour from 6 am to midnight, Monday – Sunday. Some of my Facebook fans may have been wondering, “What the heck is he doing posting something this time of night.” Now you know, and here’s what I found:

The Best and Worst Times to Post on Facebook

Best Individual Hour to Post
11 AM on Saturdays
– I received the highest impressions posting at this time

Worst Individual Hour to Post
3 PM on Fridays
– This is when I received the fewest impressions

Best Day to Post
Sundays
– Yep, I received the highest average daily impressions posting on Sundays.

Worst Day to Post
Thursdays –
Don’t ask me why, I have no answer.

Best Hour to Post throughout the Week
The 8 PM hour performed best throughout the week.

Worst Hour to Post throughout the Week
The 6 AM hour performed worst throughout the week.

Some Cautionary Advice

First: With a just a few exceptions, the variance was not that big. For example, the variance from Thursday (worst) to Sunday (best) is 17%. You should be posting status updates every day.

Second: More important than the time you post is the content you post. The more likes and comments you get on a status update, the more impressions that status update will have.

Finally: These are the best times and days to post for me. My Facebook page fans are small business owners and marketers, and located all across the globe. Your times may be different because your audience is different. The best thing for you to do is to keep track yourself.

To help you keep track, I’ve created an Excel spreadsheet. All you have to do is fill in the numbers. All the formulas have been included, when you have completely filled out the spreadsheet, you will have an accurate picture of the best time to post.

Very informative, thanks. I've downloaded your spread sheet, now what? Silly me can't figure it out. If I posted at 2pm Friday, do I enter 1 in the corresponding box? How do I enter likes or comments as they come in. OR do I keep a spread sheet for each post and mark with # 1 each time there is a like or comment? @yaseminpinar

I am surprised no one has asked this. What time zone are you in?

I am new to all of this, but am trying to reach people in animal rescue - which may be the opposite time that you would reach a marketing audience.  Of course many of the suggestions are geared to reaching people in business.  So it is great that that you have given me a tool to do calculations.  Thank you!  Just found out that bit.ly tracks - obvious I need that to use your spreadsheet - and not familiar with HootSuite, so thank you!

Hmmm. Came searching for this exact information. Well almost. Was looking for blog posts/rss feeds but would assume if readers are on FB then they are also looking at the other sources.

Wondering when it is best as I have to sites (http://www.household-budget-made-easy.com and http://www.marketing-strategies-and-ideas.com ) and would like to get the best bang for my writing.

That spreadsheet is an incredible idea. Huge time commitment but what a goldmine of info when done.

Hum, I would have thought the lunch hour would be pretty busy. Wonder why Sunday is most active on a marking blog...

Jay, I know it takes a lot of time to track this type of data. Thanks so much for sharing. Good stuff!

@SevilSevdiyar  @yaseminpinar What I do is enter the # of people that "saw this post." Comments and likes are the function of the type of post content. As you begin to fill more numbers into the spreadsheet you will start to see the formulas work. Email me if you have any more questions.

@Brett_Hardin Does that really matter? Because it doesn't matter what time zone you are, you need to know when your users are online to get maximum exposure. Or is it just me?

@MarilynKnappLitt You're welcome, Marilyn. No one can tell you what is the best time for you to post on Facebook. Every pages audience has a different flavor. But by testing and tracking you will find the best formula for you!  Best wishes for your research.

@Coolest It would just be speculation on my part. I think that's why it's important to track the impressions on your Facebook Page.

@DapperTrapper  @Brett_Hardin I think everyone's profile is a little different. Time zone probably has a little to do with the equation, but not much.

@JayEhret @DapperTrapper Jay is right. Everyone's profile is a little different. There are programs like socialbro that will figure it out for things like twitter.

Re: Facebook, I am US based as is Jay. I wanted to have some context of the post above.
